Discovering Luna Pizza: A Hidden Gem in Clayton, NC

We drive by Luna Pizza almost daily, so it stands to reason that we’ve been eagerly anticipating their grand opening, especially considering that it was originally supposed to open in the Winter/Fall of 2023. Well, Luna finally opened their doors on July 7, 2024, and we couldn’t have been any happier for them.

Moving along, my family and I decided to give them some time to work out all the kinks. Hence, we decided to wait until July 14, 2024, to try them out via table reservations or a carryout order. Much to our dismay, we were told that the waiting list was full and the kitchen was backed up, leaving us with no options for trying Luna out. We subsequently settled on Papa John’s instead.

I happened upon one of Luna’s reels (social media posts) on July 16, 2024, wherein they stated, “We’re open 7 nights per week. Come join the fun!” I commented on it by saying, “We’ve tried with no success of getting in the door or placing carryout orders,” with no expectations of a response. Much to my surprise, they responded by saying, “We’re so sorry. Please call ahead for a table, and we’ll get you right in. We had a blessedly busy first week.” I thanked them for their response and took note to try and call ahead or come closer to opening hours going forward.

My wife, Vanessa and I decided to give it another try last night, July 21, 2024, and discovered that Luna was well worth the wait. The hostess told us that there was a wait on tables, but seating was immediately available outside on the patio. I didn’t want to choose the patio as the first option considering that it was supposed to rain (and it did), hence I asked how long the wait on a table for two would be. A guy who I believe to be the owner came over, looked at the seating chart, and posited that they could probably move some folks around to get us seated immediately. Much to my surprise, he did that without even knowing who my wife and I were. I knew then that I’d have to not only give them a stellar review but also leave a great tip, but first, we had to try their food.

I ordered the Pepperoni pizza with Meatballs & Pomodoro while my wife ordered a salad along with a Pepperoni and Sausage pizza. The food was so delectable that we had to ask our amazing waitress what type of sauce they used, especially for the Meatballs & Pomodoro, that is after she told us how to pronounce it with a laugh. She said that it’s actually made inside the restaurant but that she’d ask the kitchen staff what’s in it. She came back to tell us that it’s a secret recipe known by the owner who’d left for the day. We all had a laugh as we said, “Oh, so if you tell us, you’d have to kill us, huh?” In other words, we loved her conversational banter. But not only that, we loved the way that she looked out for all of our needs, including ensuring that our cups were always full. We also loved the sense of camaraderie that existed amongst all of the staff; you could tell that they were all happy to be there. And last but not least, we were impressed by how all of the staff members operated as a well-oiled machine in a small place.

My point in providing all of this is to say that Luna Pizza is a hidden treasure in the heart of Clayton, NC, that’s well worth the wait. You should definitely check it out if you’re ever in town and tell them that Dedrick and Vanessa sent you.
